Early in the morning when there is little light, flash is reflected by the water and ripples at different angles depending on the height of the water ripples. No ripples and uniform reflection = uniform illumination of the birds. Ripples and non-uniform reflection = patterns of ripples on the bird's feathers. The reflections create fascinating patterns on the large birds (snowy egret, blue heron). Here are a few examples
