January 26, 2008:Ant-mimicking jumping spider, probably Myrmarachne maxillosa

Today, Larry appeared (of Macro Maniacs of Singapore fame) and found a very interesting spider that mimics an ant. Joseph Koh describes two classes in his Guide to Common Spiders of Singapore. Here is where we found her - perhaps her home? Its construction is similar to that of Araneus mitificus.

She is called an ant spider because her abdomen is segmented into two parts - typically spiders have a single abdomen, giving the appearance of a three part (head-thorax-abdomen) body seen in insects.
