Photo Adventures with Curiosity and Learning

January 30, 2007: Continued focus training near the Queenstown Libaray

I spent last weekend with friends in Chennai (that story is for me to put together this weekend). The flight from Chennai to Singapore was 2:30 am arriving at 6am, home for a shower and then off to work. By 3pm I could not keep my eyes open - so I left for home to take a nap. Then when I got home, I knew that if I took a nap, I would not sleep later. So with camera and tripod, I walked across the street to check up on our banana spider Nephila maculata - and to see what else was happening. It is clear that I need more practice with close focus - and with the wind blowing it was doubly difficult. But here are some of the better photos.

Here is her head - and I suppose it is time to name "her". Her name is Belinda - a wonderful lady that solves all problems for me at the GMS office. This photo was from a video camera - just playing with capturing some video and later seeing if I can extract it, sharpen it and add it to these pages.

Here is Belinda. You can see the golden color of her silk. These are natural life photos so also some interesting shadows. Note to the left a small orange something. This has 6 legs - so not a spider but moves from place to place - sort of sharing Belinda's web.

Another view of her - with the small orange something to the left and another orange something to the right.

Looking from below - you can more clearly see the tiny legs of the orange something. jan 30 0141 nephila red

Something moved the web so Belinda is off in search of.

Here you can see the golden color of the top structural element of her web

I don't know the name of these, but they evolve to a yellow flower. I though the shadows were fun.

Is this a moth or butterfly? Something I need to learn

A fly - not to sharply focused but a good try.

This was the surprise today. About 5 or 6 of these little crane fliess were hanging onto a single spider silk thread. Their wings were colorful - diffraction of sunlight.

Another view

Here is a clearer view with better focus. I am not sure how these guys are attached to the strand of spider silk - but they are and move around changing the order in their linear array.

Butterfly or moth? Actually, a skipper.A learning opportunity for me

A closer look - not great focus but getting better

A green hopper

Here is a disappointment. This little spider, figure 8 shaped, was reflecting incredible color from the silver-like bands. This is the best of the photos but not very good. This guy can hop - so a jumping spider of some sort.
